I am having occasion to put mindfulness to specific practical purpose beyond meditation and daily affairs. I have been dealing with tinitus for many years, and, recently, due to ear infection, have ended up with a blocked ear which greatly increases the tinitus, especially at night trying to get off to sleep. The 'ringing/buzzing' is relentless and unusually loud in the quiet of night, undisguised by normal surrounding noise of the day. In a desperate attempt to quiet the tinitus, I consciously relax my body, usually with body scanning, and focus very mindfully, persistently, on my breath. Gradually, the 'ringing/buzzing' quietens...I find myself not so aware of it...and, soon, almost unaware that sleep is overtaking me, I drift off. Proof positive - mindfulness works! Thank you.
